Cloud Migration: Build vs. Buy vs. Hybrid

The Cloud Dilemma

Migrating to the cloud is no longer a question of "if," but "how." However, the path isn't one-size-fits-all. Organizations often get stuck analyzing whether to refactor applications (Build), purchase SaaS replacements (Buy), or maintain a Hybrid approach.

The Case for "Buy" (SaaS)

If a process is not your core competency (e.g., HR, Payroll, CRM), Buy it. SaaS solutions like Salesforce or Workday offer immediate value and offload the maintenance burden.

*Pros*: Speed to market, low maintenance.
*Cons*: Limited customization, vendor lock-in.

The Case for "Build" (Cloud-Native)

If the software is your competitive advantage, Build it. Refactoring legacy apps into microservices on AWS/Azure allows for infinite scalability.

*Pros*: Custom fit, ownership of IP, long-term cost efficiency.
*Cons*: High initial dev cost, requires skilled DevOps talent.

The Hybrid Reality

For many government agencies and large enterprises, Hybrid is the only viable near-term option. Sensitive data stays on-prem (or in GovCloud), while customer-facing apps move to the public cloud.

Our Advice

Don't lift-and-shift blindly. A "lift-and-shift" often results in the same dirty laundry, just in a more expensive house. Assess your portfolio application by application.
